Molly's Revenge

The Western Shore
From epic sets on highland bagpipes and fiddle, to angelic folk songs layered over bouzouki and mandola, to ripping sets of Irish jigs and reels, the lads of Molly's Revenge have expanded their range on their seventh release. For this stunning album they enlisted the help of award-winning vocalist and accordionist Moira Smiley (VOCO), legendary producer John Doyle (Solas), and percussionist Fraser Stone (Old Blind Dogs). Moira Smiley has done extensive vocal work for folk, new, early and pop music projects for film, television, and recordings. Producer John Doyle was named by Irish America Magazine as one of its Top 100 Irish Americans for 2008. He is widely regarded as the master of Irish guitar and has been in high demand for performance and production work since his days as a founding member of Irish supergroup Solas. Moira Smiley
Guest vocalist Moira Smiley travels the world as a soloist in Early and Traditional music and creates new work with dance, theatre and film. While immersing herself in a cappella folk song from Eastern Europe and various other vibrant harmony traditions, she continues to study Irish sean nos (old-style) singing and Appalachian ballad and dance-song. She recorded a solo CD, Rua, of Irish, Appalachian and her own songs (rua means “red” in Gaelic). With VOCO, her fiery roots vocal-band, Moira fuses a new sound with voices, banjo, cello and percussion that is rooted in traditional song.

John Doyle
Says Producer John Doyle, "Santa Cruz, California is a long way from Ireland and Scotland. One would think it unusual that there would be such a strong community of Celtic music in Northern California but there is, and Molly's Revenge is at the heart of it. This recording showcases the confidence and enthusiasm in their playing and their maturity as a group. Their diligence to the tradition has produced this fine collection of material--old and new--which fans of Celtic music are sure to embrace."

Fan Fundraising
To help finance the new record, the band launched an online fan fundraising campaign that raised them almost $8000 and made them part of a new wave of indie bands that are making an end run around the traditional record labels. The band is offering by download three exclusive extra tracks that didn't fit on "The Western Shore," tracks that are available only through mollysrevenge.com or at live shows. They have also made the first track on the album available for free download at their web site.

"Moira Smiley's songs are captivating, holding the listener enchanted with their telling, and her rich voice captures the essence of great traditional singing." --Shay Black of the legendary Black family

"They bring to the music a vital and joyous creativity that excites even the hardest of hearts." --John Doyle
